On Sunday 17th October, junior golf players from all over South Wales came together to play
in the first junior golf championships of The Joshua Foundation sponsored by Sony.
Held at the beautiful Cottrell Park club in the Vale of Glamorgan, the youngsters enjoyed perfect weather and played some outstanding golf.
The Joshua Foundation is a national charity that gives holidays and experiences to children, and their families, who are suffering from terminal cancer.
TJF is the Charity of the Year for Sony UK Technology Centre, Pencoed who, very generously, gave some super prizes to the winners.
The juniors represented their own golf clubs, having won a qualifying competition earlier in the year and, as expected, the quality of play was very high.
After a poor start, Callum Matthews of radyr Golf Club finished strongly to take 3rd place with
38 pts. Playing off a handicap of 20, the 13 year old was delighted to win a Sony E Book Reader.
The first two places were decided on a back-nine countback after Joe Gibbs of Bargoed GC and Cameron Sleeth of Cottrell Park tied on 40points.
However, it was the home club’s 14year old player who took the honours with a slightly better back score.
Joe was very disappointed but cheered up when he received a fantastic Sony Rolly MP3 Player for 2nd prize.
So, The Joshua Foundation Junior championships for 2009 went to Cameron Sleeth who received the annual cup and brilliant Sony SP3 Playstation and games.
Sarah Cornelius, the Chief Executive of The Joshua Foundation, said, “Making children happy is what the Joshua Foundation is all about. Today has been a big success, raising much needed funds for the charity’s work to help children with terminal cancer. A big thank you to all clubs who took part in this Year’s competition”.
